BACKGROUND: Evelin von Essar, ninth in line to the Dukedom of Ostberg of the Holy Empire, favored house to the Emperor's throne. Born as the redundancy's redundancy to the other redundancy, the young Evelin was apathetic toward matters of politics and state. With next to no chance of ever ascending to Dukedom or even inheriting a notable estate, she tossed away ambition. Disease was a rare killer thanks to Ostberg's Sorcerers; they lived in times of peace, and political subterfuge was subdued and reduced to petty squabbles - as even the most slimy of nobles was a fierce patriot that despised the thought of giving an outside enemy the upper hand through internal strife.
Evelin's interests shifted toward swordsmanship and history. The Empire's museums were among the finest on the continent, housing artefacts and heirlooms from ages and cultures the world over. While most native interest in foreign culture stopped at curious displayed behind glass, Evelin's passion blossomed. She sought to dig deeper. To learn, to see, to experience more about the world outside of her country's borders. Of course, even as the ninth princess, it would be nigh unthinkable to allow royalty to engage in such dangerous expeditions, especially at a young age. It would take years into her adulthood of rigorous study, practice, and persistence for her father to relent.
Initial trips went only beyond Ostberg's immediate borders. Franckia, Coryminster, and the Shrouded Isles. It wasn't until Evelin planned a secret detour away from her entourage that things took a strange turn. With little but what she carried on her back, the princess made for the distant lands of the East. The Isles' Jewel, known for its spices, rich culture, and general discontent with foreign rule, became her destination. Rumour told that the country was still full of untapped ruin and legacy, hidden in the swathes of jungle and dangerous wildlife that made expeditions deadly and costly. Foreign language was no issue, for if there was one thing that scribes did well, it was to encapsulate the language of others. Evelin was versed in a variety of alien tongues by this point - prepared for her long journey.
