Near the shoreline, at the bottom of a massive waterfall, with two massive statues overlooking a large body of water, stood a single shinobi. Under normal circumstances this wouldn't seem so out of place as many came here to see the grand sights, but it was what was a bit further in land that stood out.
Masshiro stood, arms crossed, dressed far too formally for the location, with what looks to be a small circular arena at his back. It was small compared to that of the grand structures some countries used for holding events and fights, but it was some forty yards length and width, hence standing out in this location.
There Masshiro stood, waiting for any other Shinobi to show, for no other reason than curiosity and boredom. The strangest occurrence was the structure seeming to appear only as onlookers got closer to it, barely a mirage in the distance until it was clear as day in a location it didn't seem like it should be in to begin with. The time alone it would have taken to creature such a structure, just for a spar? There the Kurama waited, looking out over the water unmoving, ready to, hopefully, sate his curiosity, alleviate his boredom, and gain some much needed training.

HP: 360 (460 w/ C.A.) | Chakra: 17 | Regen: 5/post TAGS: Masshiro Kurama NOTES: Leaves whipped by Arata’s head as he dashed underneath the forest canopy. The young Namikaze had taken a rare day off—a day to train and recuperate many of the energies which would serve him well in the field. While long hours behind a desk served to keep his mind relatively sharp, they had done little to enhance his speed or senses. Occasionally, it was good to take an extended run through the forests of the Land of Fire.
Now, in the early afternoon, he had come to one of his favorite locations: two towering figures facing each other, a massive waterfall flowing between them. The statues had a timeless quality about them, like the stories his grandmother used to tell. These were ancient figures, remnants of a battle long past. Their age—and the fact that none alive seemed to remember just who these shinobi were—helped Arata put all his little worries and grievances into perspective.
As he approached the waterfall, though, the air seemed to shimmer. Almost immediately, a decent-sized arena appeared upon the water’s edge. A lone figure, arms crossed across his chest, stood in front of the structure, staring directly at him. A strange figure—definitely worth investigating.
Concentrating chakra into the bottom of his feet, Arata walked across the surface of the water. As he approached, he raised a hand in greeting. “It’s rare that I run into anyone else out here!” He called out. “What’s your name, stranger?”

Despite obviously standing here, waiting for someone, anyone really to walk past, Masshiro's poker face gave absolutely nothing way. He simply stared, only his eyes moving as he watched the figure, but mentally he was already going over plans, ideas, what he would say, what he might ask, and a million other things.
What he wasn't thinking too much about was if this person could fully take in what was behind him. They didn't seem annoyed by someone trying to alter their perception, so if they knew what they were seeing wasn't real, they had a better poker face than even he did. There was a bit of a pause between the simple question and the response, as he began to relax, letting his arms fall naturally to his side. "Masshiro." Turning to walk towards where the large structure stood, he turned his head just enough to make sure his voice was clear. "Kurama." Continuing to walk away he stopped short of the structure and half-turned, seeing if he was being followed moving closer to it. "Only my second time here. In hindsight, not the best place to wait for shinobi to pass by. Here I was hoping someone would show up, and after hours of waiting, one finally did." He was clearly looking between the space where the structure was and back towards the newcomer. "What about you, stranger? What's your name?"

HP: 360 (460 w/ C.A.) | Chakra: 17 | Regen: 5/post TAGS: Masshiro Kurama NOTES: Notes here Odd fellow, Arata thought, taking in the stranger before him. The other man’s behavior was strange to say the least. His reaction certainly differed from the average traveler one encountered in the Land of Fire. Even his name—Kurama—had an unfamiliar tone about it. Was he a foreigner?
The combination of the man standing in front of him and the sudden appearance of the arena—a phenomenon which seemed illusory the closer he got to it—put him on edge. Growing up in the Forest of Death, there was no shortage of stories about what sort of malcontents and monsters one could bump into deep in the woods. This felt like one of those stories: a lone figure conjuring up illusions, waiting for a weary shinobi to stumble into his trap. Arata was not weary, though, and this seemed worth investigating. He cracked his neck and loosened his shoulders, following Masshiro toward the arena.
“Arata Namikaze,” He replied to the Kurama’s question, bowing his head slightly. “Pleased to meet you.”
“And,” he added after a brief pause, “I’m curious to hear just what’s so important that you needed to wait for hours for someone to stumble across you and this…display.” He tilted his staff toward the arena, curious about its purpose.

"I kinda want to punch you." In his mind that made total sense, and it was the truth, even if it wasn't necessarily personalized for Arata. He simply wanted to spar, wanted to fight, at this point he might have just settled for a dance contest to relieve this boredom. "That came out wrong. Sort of. Call it boredom, call it looking for a fight, a spar, training, whatever. My clan isn't from these lands, so I find myself with some family, but the only thing they are swinging is hammers. So, I wait here, for someone to fight." The guy didn't ask for his life story but there was more detail all the same. His body was slumped a bit as if he had in fact been sitting here for hours, despite the perfect posture he had waiting, now he looked like a bored child with all but the vocal groaning.
"So, can you fight, and if you can are you willing? I don't think I can stand out here much longer." Motioning over towards the waterfall and then to the large body of water, he finally let out a groan." "Not a fan of all this humidity. It's hell on my hair."

HP: 360 (460 w/ C.A.) | Chakra: 17 | Regen: 5/post TAGS: Masshiro Kurama NOTES: Notes here “I—” Arata started before hearing the rest of Masshiro’s explanation. This was a strange individual, indeed, but he was equally straightforward. Arata sensed no lie in the Kurama’s words. More than that, he even felt he understood his sentiment. It was, after all, the same sentiment which had driven him to the water that day: a sense that life was growing stale, that one needed to be challenged toward some new growth and engaged on a different level.
He grinned. “Fine, I’ll give you what you’re looking for. I could use some training myself.” He squatted down, leaning to one side and then to the other, stretching his legs out. “Just don’t expect me to go easy on you!”
Standing, he pulled his staff off his shoulder. It was slick with mist from the waterfall, but he was able to wipe the moisture off on his cloak. Using it as a walking stick, he began to stride towards the illusory arena in front of him. With a glance back at Masshiro, he questioned, “In here, I’m assuming?”

"Oh right, people like to say things like, I won't hold back, or I won't go easy on you, before fighting, huh?"
Masshiro wasn't really great at quips, and he assumed that despite the sentiment there was a chance this person would in fact hold back. He didn't foresee asking for a spar then finding a sword through his heart, or someone trying to remove his head, but he wasn't always the best judge of character.
"Well, if you aren't holding back, at least don't put holes anywhere that there are vital organs. Not much point in trying to get stronger if I just die." There was no stretching, and truthfully he barely seemed like he was ready for a fight. Removing his coat slowly, he sat it off to the side, then rolling up his sleeves in a far too formal for fighting outfit. By the looks of him, he wasn't in the same shape as most shinobi, but Masshiro knew all too well how often perception could be deceiving.
"Alright, let me try some of that pre-fight talk. Let's see, uuuuuh, I'm gonna, no...this is gonna be a fight! Yeah that sucked. I got nothin'." Standing there with his hands on his hips, he seemed completely distracted from the fight he had just asked for, staring off in the distance and mumbling to himself trying to find some catchy quip, snapping out of it as he was spoken to again, making a motion towards the arena. "Oh that, yeah." Walking over he walked into what looked to be the only obvious entrance without jumping over or scaling something, walking close to the center and giving a wide-mouthed yawn. "Sorry, not tired, just standing there staring for so long put my brain into a trance. Anyways, should be interesting. Never met each other, no idea how either of us fight. Should I start, since I offered? Kinda awkward at this."

HP: 360 (460 w/ C.A.) | Chakra: 17 | Regen: 5/post TAGS: Masshiro Kurama NOTES: Notes here Arata listened with an amused expression as Masshiro sought after some pre-fight quip. He was beginning to get the sense that whatever battle lay ahead would not be the typical sort of combat he was used to. Everything about the Kurama was unorthodox—from his awkward responses to his head-in-the-clouds levels of nonchalance. The way the man fought would likely be just as novel and unexpected. It would be hard to get a read on what was going on in his head.
He joined the other shinobi in the center of the stadium, setting his pack down at the entrance as he walked in. The only thing he kept with him was his walking staff—an item as useful in combat as it was on the road.
When Masshiro suggested he be the one to initiate the sparring match, Arata nodded. “That’s fine with me.” He took a deep breath, settling himself, and built up the chakra in his legs and lungs. Whatever this first attack was, he’d find a way to dodge and counterattack before the Kurama could get his own defenses up.

Despite having rolled his sleeves up after removing his coat, he was already fanning himself, despite the temperature being fairly moderate all things considered. After a moment he finally began frustratingly unbuttoning his shirt looking around, remembering he had left his coat far enough away that he wasn't going to bother with it for now and simply walked a few feet away, folded his shirt and laid it on the ground. It was now clear why he was so uncomfortable and warm given he had been essentially wearing the now visible layer of armor and what looked to be some sort of metal bracers on his forearms, under both a long sleeved shirt and a fairly long coat. Waving his arms and giving a bit of a hop on his toes he rolled his neck and looked around to get a quick feel of the nearest obstacles.
"Okay then, think I'm ready." Suddenly he turned, rather quickly on his heels, and began walking away, getting some distance between the two, and just as suddenly and just as quickly spun back around. Nothing seemed to be happening at first, as Masshiro stood there staring, his hands lazily at best raised in front of him almost as if he wasn't sure what to do with them.
Slowly his chin raised as he began to look up, the sky starting to darken as clouds formed, very clearly right above where they were facing off. The air felt thick and a heavy rumbling began to tremble as thunder sounded. There was no rain, no lightning, but the noise began to grow, overbearing one would say. Masshiro's eyes met with Arata's once more and the thunder once more became louder, growing in intensity, deafening loud in Arata's ears. It was as if the storm wasn't up above, but right on top of him, trying to shake the teeth right from his mouth.

This sends 120 points of wind damage at Masshiro. As the clouds began to darken above the two shinobi, Arata tensed up. Had Masshiro activated some sort of ninjutsu? If he had, the Namikaze hadn’t seen him form any hand signs to do so. Still, neither lightning nor downpour ever came. Instead, a low rumbling began to fill his head, growing to a bone-shaking roar. “Damn, that’s annoying,” he muttered. The noise hurt, but he fought the urge to grasp at his ears. Experience had taught him that the best way to end a technique like this was to interrupt it at its source.
Struggling to concentrate, Arata managed to mold wind chakra in his lungs. With a sharp hiss, he exhaled, and razor-like winds wrapped around his staff. Then, with a burst of speed, he dashed toward Masshiro. The fool had armor, sure, but that just meant he’d have a harder time avoiding the incoming blow.
As he closed the gap on his opponent, the Namikaze dropped low to the ground and swung the staff at Masshiro’s shins. If he could swipe the other shinobi off his feet, he would have an easier time rushing him with a flurry of attacks. Still, the blow was weaker than he would have expected. His technique felt sloppy—affected, no doubt, by the painful ringing in his ears.

The effects of Genjutsu were somewhat of a shared experience, more so for the Kurama than any other clan. Every Genjutsu they cast bring a part of the illusion into the real world. In this instance Masshiro can see and to a degree hear what Arata hears and sees, allowing him to react in his own way.
This was not one of those instance where he played off experiencing everything Arata did, choosing to watch the response, how his temporary opponent would reply, and all in all he wasn't disappointed. The sheer willpower was impressive, because he was well aware of the sounds he was experiencing right now, and he knew well enough the pain it caused.
Watching closely, he took note of the deep breath, the precise way he exhaled, and the result of both. He much preferred the idea of someone with an affinity for wind compared to dealing with that Uchiha nearly burning down the forest they were in fighting. Unfortunately what he hadn't internalized was the speed that tended to come which such jutsu usage, and this was definitely no exception. By the time he pulled up his arms to defend himself Arata was already right in front of him, and immediately he could see what he had planned to defend himself here wasn't going to work. Something clicked as he thought to try something, had he thought more than a moment about he never would have tried, as he immediately slid his legs apart as if he was going to do an athletic act and do the splits. What came of it was his legs splitting, him immediately losing his balance, and falling awkwardly to his knees. Curling almost immediately with his arms up like a white-haired turtle, the staff clanged off of the bracers he wore, letting out a loud ringing sound similar to striking a tuning fork. The damage was blunted by the special chakra bracers he wore, but he was immediately knocked from his knees right onto his back as the sound continued to ring out.
Both of his arms raised, shaking them a bit as they had temporarily gone numb, and staring up at Arata. Slowly he pushed himself further away and got back to his feet, still holding up one of his arms, the metal bracers still ringing, the sound starting to fade, but all of the hair on Arata's body would begin to stand on end. It was as if his entire body had become statically charged with increasing effect, and what was barely an uncomfortable feeling started to become the equivalent of shocking jolts, as if someone had stabbed him with pure energy.

He felt his staff connect with the other shinobi’s bracers, slamming him onto his back. I’ve got you now! he thought, bringing his staff back around for another blow. Just as he wound up for the strike, though, he felt the hair stand up on the back of his neck. Something was wrong. Instinctively, he dropped and rolled to the right. Sparks trailed behind him, zapping at the place where he had stood just an instant before. The electricity chased after him, the little sparks growing into larger jolts, all trying to surround him. One managed to catch his ankle; another his left arm, both bringing a painful numbness to the area.
Building up chakra in his legs, he sprinted away from the static charge, barely keeping ahead of the cloud of lightning which seemed to be tethered to him. With a flip, he landed and sprang in a new direction—shooting straight toward Masshiro, a cloud of sparks trailing immediately behind him. This time, he’d make sure his blows fully connected.

The distance Arata put between the two of them was enough time to get his feet under him fully and back into a more competent stance. Heavily shaking his arms he tried to get blood flowing again as the numbness finally passed and the ringing died down. Looking down at his bracers he thought to test out his new weapon, perhaps try out one of his newer jutsu, but he could still feel the effects of that earlier blow and just how strong it was. His opponent wasn't pulling his punches, so he thought he'd respect such an act and return the favor in kind. The underside of his gauntlets began to glow at a few spots that didn't seem to stand out before, showing now the small rock and crystal like protrusions of embedded pieces of a larger chakra meteorite. Bringing his arms together he lowered his head as the clouds that had formed earlier began to grow thicker, darker, casting a shadow across a large area around where the two were fighting. Much like earlier, the sounds of thunder began to ring in Arata's ears, but with a much more sinister sound, despite just being rumbling. Each rumble brought with it a moment of unease, as if the sound itself was implanting fear that wasn't there before. It was just thunder, but it was off, something about the way the clouds looked were off, it wasn't just unnatural, it was terrifying. "Never been much of a fan of storms." Masshiro yelled over what he knew to be the loud sounds echoing in Arata's head, but even his voice just didn't sound right.

One look at the dark clouds which had formed overhead, and one moment listening to the constant, annoying, terrifying sound of thunder, made Arata question just how safe the spar had become. Was Masshiro trying to kill him or something? He felt a slight tremor in his knees.
“Enough of that,” he chided his body, still running straight for the Kurama. With a surge of chakra, he summoned all of his speed into one burst. For a brief, glorious moment, the world blurred before his eyes. Almost instantly, he was behind his opponent, transitioning the momentum of his sprint into a downward swing of his staff.
He could see it clearly, now, with the ringing absent for just a moment: he could wear Masshiro down. The strange effects of his jutsu could be avoided, so long as he stayed moving, and it seemed like the man had little hand-to-hand combat experience. He could feel in his guy that the attack had missed, at least a part of it had, despite the clear indication the illusion itself had taken hold. This was the first time someone had ever countered his Genjutsu in such away, not just so thoroughly, but ever. The very idea of it was far more damaging than any jutsu could ever be, as it gripped onto his ego and squeezed, twisted, causing the carefree facade to turn into a lip curling look of annoyance.
In his mind his Genjutsu were top tier, his skills were unmatched, even if he was to take punches, kicks, fire, weapon strikes, all of it would pale in comparison to his own jutsu. Nineteen years on this planet and not once had this happened, not once had he even lost a fight or the advantage in one for long. He completely froze up, staring forward as if his entire world view had just crumbled, and his left eye twitched.
At this point he had completely lost where Arata was, partially due to their speed and partially due to the thrashing such a simple action had done to his ego. It wasn't until he felt the wind of Arata's movement that he flinched and started to shift his weight, feeling the hard staff smacking down onto his right shoulder blade, buckling his knees. Masshiro's head snapped around as he pivoted to face Arata, staring right into his eyes. This was the last place he usually wanted to be, in close combat with someone, but in this instance it was exactly where he wanted to be. Regaining his footing and the strength in his legs he stepped in even closer and brought his arms up, cracking his bracers together as that same sound from earlier when they were stuck echoed. Once more the sound of a tuning fork echoed, but this time something was different. As the sound met Arata's ears there was what could only be described as a blood-curdling scream, that of Arata's own voice somehow, even though he wasn't actually making the sound. It wasn't distracting or pulsing, shaking his body like the earlier thunderous sounds, but as if someone had taken two kunai and was attempting to forcefully push them into his eardrums.
