Few people would have expected Michiko Uzumaki to amount to much of anything. Born as the fifth child to two rice farmers, her future appeared relatively set. She would grow up tending to the family farm, perhaps meet a boy in the nearby village, and settle down with him on a farm nearby. While some might have scoffed at such a destiny or tried to kick it off, Michiko did neither. Even from a young age, she delighted in the simple joys of a quiet, hard-working life. Unlike her distant cousins—the great shinobi of the Uzumaki clan—she had little desire for anything more adventurous than taking the occasional ship out in the great mists which cloaked the Land of Water. She was certainly a curious child, but mainly about small things: about why rice grew, how water bugs moved the way they did, or whether or not they would see crabs on the beach.
All of that changed one Spring morning. Michiko, nine at the time, woke to the smell of smoke. Minutes later, she stood outside her family’s home watching as a blaze engulfed the whole building. Her brothers dashed back and forth with barrels of water, but she knew that their efforts were in vain. The fire had spread too far and grown too high to be quenched by a few gallons of water pulled from the rice fields.
Suddenly, a streak of red dashed into the fire. She watched, wide-eyed, as a shadowed figure stood in the flames and seemingly pulled the fire into itself. As quick as the red streak had appeared, the fire evaporated. Emerging from the charred building, the shadowed figure tucked away a scroll and moved to speak with Michiko’s father. Michiko had stood awestruck for what felt like hours, staring into the embers of her old home.
She would come to understand later that what she had seen was fuinjutsu. Later still, she would learn that it was not even a particularly skilled shinobi who had sealed away the fire. However, nothing could remove the strange fascination that had settled in her heart that night. She became obsessed with learning more—smuggling books on fuinjutsu back to the farm and sending more than a few letters to her cousins the next island over. Toolshed doors began to bear the chalk markings of various seals, and Michiko’s parents stumbled upon the girl practicing hand signs more than once. Even the smallest successes—a little burst of chakra here or a glowing seal there—made her giddy for weeks.
After two years of similar behavior, a letter to the Uzumaki elders led to a quick decision: Michiko would leave the farm to study the sealing arts. Placed under the guidance of her great-great aunt Aiko, an eccentric fuinjutsu master, the young Uzumaki quickly mastered the fundamentals of the art. By the time she was thirteen, she began to assist Aiko in offering fuinjutsu and medical services to other clans. The two formed a strange couple—the child and the elder, each strangely fascinated with even the simplest of techniques, each launching into impassioned (but heavily jargoned) speeches about the merits of one seal over another.
Over time, Aiko began to introduce Michiko to the higher forms of fuinjutsu. These seals were used far less often on simple house visits, sometimes even being forbidden unless the clan elders offered their approval. Poor health confined Aiko to bed not long after, but she continued to pass on her knowledge to her unofficial successor. In her final days of life, the elderly Uzumaki began to speak more cryptically, speaking in quickened, hushed tones about what had been lost over the centuries—secret arts which ought not to have been forgotten by the Uzumaki clan, secret arts which only a true fuinjutsu master could appreciate. Michiko scribbled down what she understood of her master’s whispers, a familiar sense of fascination swelling up in her heart.
Within a week she had set off on a ship, her master’s final words still echoing in her mind. She would travel to the Land of Wind first, in search of the secrets Aiko had quietly pursued for decades, the secrets of their common ancestor: Dvesha Otsutsuki.
