BACKGROUND:
Expectations have always colored Arata's life, even from before his birth.
His mother, Akari, was one of the most talented kunoichi the Namikaze had ever produced. Fighting alongside Arata's father, Makoto, she had shaped her clan from an all-but-unknown family into a small but powerful force in the Land of Fire. Makoto, the clan leader at the time, wove the Namikaze through the dangerous political trials that came with such an increase in fame. The two complemented each other perfectly, so much so that it came as little surprise when they announced their engagement to their friends and family. A year later, when word began to spread that the couple was expecting a child, the small Namikaze village hoped for nothing less than a child as skilled as his mother and as tactful as his father.
Arata's childhood was filled with a constant expectation to grow, and ideally, to grow quickly. To some extent, the young boy did just this. He excelled in both his studies and his practice as a shinobi, quickly passing his peers in these areas. Gifted with natural speed and a quick grasp of tactics, he first set foot on the battlefield at the age of ten. Working as a scout and a spy, his efforts helped the clan stay afloat through the most violent parts of the Great War.
However, Arata's skill was often inhibited by his shyness and lack of ambition. He was more content to listen than to speak, more pleased to follow than to lead. And above all, he was most pleased to simply do nothing. Makoto, concerned that his son should take more initiative, assigned him to a special mission accompanying a merchant caravan. The work was two-fold: simultaneously protecting the caravan while also secretly spying against any clans and political figures the merchants encountered. Over the course of the five years that Arata travelled with the caravan, a dramatic shift occurred within him. The once solitary shinobi had developed a deep love for the stories and people of the various lands he had seen. He became a passionate story-teller and an even more ambitious story-collector, sharing tales from distant lands and keeping a sharp ear out for anyone at an inn who might have an exciting piece of information.
However, after many years on the road, Arata was finally called home. The son of the daimyō, Prince Itsuki, had reached out to the Namikaze requesting a shinobi tutor for his youngest daughter, Midori. The clan had decided that Arata would be well-suited for the prestigious position, a mission which would ideally create close ties between the Namikaze and the daimyō of the Land of Fire for years to come. The young shinobi accepted his new appointment, travelling to a distant Ninshū monastery where the little girl was being educated. For the next year and a half, Arata worked with the child, teaching her the basics of chakra control and entertaining her with stories of his different adventures. While the mission led to little genuine interaction with the daimyō or the prince, Arata came to care deeply for Midori.
One night, though, as the Great War was beginning to slow to a halt, shinobi from a distant land managed to infiltrate the monastery and kidnap the young girl. Alerted to the danger too late, Arata pursued the kidnapers deep into the Forest of Death, but the only sign he found of them was Midori's favorite hairbow laying muddied on the ground. As days went by without any word or call for a ransom, his concern and grief only deepened.
Retaliation came quickly from the daimyō, though not in the way Arata expected. While the young shinobi continued to search tirelessly for leads on Midori's whereabouts, he also expected to be imprisoned or executed at any moment. The daimyō, as well as his son, were not known to be patient men, and the loss of the royal granddaughter was no small slip-up. Yet as the days turned into weeks, no palace guards, assassins, or executioners came for Arata.
Instead, he was sent a messenger. The man came not from the daimyō, but from the Namikaze, and he carried terrible news. The clan, including his own parents, had been all but wiped out. The details were foggy, but a little digging revealed clearly enough what had happened. In one of the final battles of the Great War, a battle which should have been little more than a formality, the daimyō had sent the Namikaze into the thick of combat with little to no reinforcements. Wedged between two larger clans, escape had been next to impossible.
The messenger had been sent to recall Arata to the clan's home, both to mourn the dead and to take up his father's place as clan leader.
Over the following year, Arata grieved and began to rebuild the clan. He brought back the various shinobi who had been away at the time of the massacre, he comforted those who mourned the loss of their families, and he sought out new alliances to protect their village from further harm. As the clan retreated back into the bamboo grove it called home, Arata also began to nurture a new fire which had begun to burn in his heart: a desire for justice, or something akin to it. He continued to search, secretly, for any sign of Midori or her kidnappers, and he began to plot, even more secretly, how he might one day strike back against the daimyō of the Land of Fire.

Type: Defensive Ninjutsu
Affinity: Wind
Action: Long Action
Chakra Cost: 10
Power/Damage: 10x
Effects: Persisting

The momentum of this technique keeps the winds rotating even after the user has stopped infusing chakra into the air.
[Instead of only lasting for this post, this defense jutsu persists into the next two posts as well.]
B RANK
Name: Bōjutsu: Taka no Kokyū [Staff Technique: Hawk's Breath]
Rank: B
XP: 8XP
Type: Offensive Taijutsu
Affinity: Wind
Action: Long Action
Chakra Cost: 15
Power/Damage: 15x
Effects: Nintaijutsu; Quick Attack
Description: Infusing chakra in their lungs, the user of this technique exhales on their staff and coats it with a thin layer of wind. Though this wind quickly dispels, it temporarily turns the staff into a far more lethal weapon. The wind chakra enables the normally-dull item to take on a sharp edge, slicing through the air with greater ease and cutting deeper into the user's foes.
[Instead of using the taijutsu score for its damage or power, the user of this technique can add their taijutsu and ninjutsu scores together (to a maximum of 20) and use that total instead. The user adds their speed to their taijutsu (or nintaijutsu), to a maximum of 25, for this attack. The user cannot use a short action this post.]
